General Information
The southernmost island in the Cook Island’s group, Mangaia is thought to be the most ancient in the South Pacific. This large fossilized coral island of 51.8 sq km rises dramatically out of the sea to form a fortress-like wall that plunges into the interior, in some places by as much as 60m. The central basin of mainly crop land surrounds the dramatic peak of Rangimotia which offers impressive views over the island. There are 4 smaller and more accessible peaks to also view the island from. Like most of the Cook Islands, Mangaia is honeycombed with caves, although here the cave systems are huge! Te Rua Rere Cave, a burial cave, is the largest and over 2km long. It holds impressive stalagmites and stalactites along with many burial skeletons. Unique to Mangaia is the Mangaian Kingfisher, endemic to the island. Sea swimming & snorkeling is not particularly good as the reef is very shallow all around the island.
