General Information
The tiny island of Mitiaro with a population of only 230 is only 6km across and 16km in circumference and rises only 9m from sea level. It resembles an oblong saucer with most of the interior no higher than 3m above sea level and as such the interiors are mostly made up of swamp land and lakes from which the locals make a living exporting giant eels and milkfish to Rarotonga. The beaches here are not as impressive in size as others of the Cook Islands’ however there are some nice small ones to be found doted around the island. At low tide it can be very shallow and swimming and snorkeling become limited. The lakes and limestone grottos however offer the best swimming of all with their gigantic freshwater pools.
